Safety signs have become a common feature in almost every aspect of human life. They are necessary, because safety is of paramount importance, and cannot be neglected in any case. Whether you are driving on a road or walking on the sidewalk, you have to follow the road safety signs. Similarly, in case of an excavation, or other construction project, you have to follow the signs placed on the exteriors; otherwise, there could be serious accidents, and loss of life.
Safety signs are essential by law and the local, and national government can prosecute any person not abiding by this rule. They can even go to jail, or have their work license canceled if proper arrangements are not made at the work place. The United Kingdom has a very efficient public safety department, and such breach of law is not allowed at all.
Following is a list of some of the more important safety signs with a brief explanation as how they help keep a safe environment:
Road Signs
We get to see road signs as the most common type of safety signs around us. They are generally installed at every major point on the road, and higher priority is given to locations more prone to accidents or construction work. Most widely used road sign is the no parking sign. This sign informs the drivers that a particular location cannot be used to park vehicles, and any driver who does not follow the rule is normally heavily fined, and the vehicles can be lifted, and removed by the traffic constables.
Other road signs include dangerous curve signs, school, or hospital-ahead signs, speed breakers or railway crossings-ahead signs, etc. The main motive is to provide safety to the driver, and the public around him on the road. Any driver not following these signs can cause a dangerous accident. Especially in cases of railway crossings, the probability is higher, and many accidents happen just because of the negligence of the driver.
Construction Safety Sign
Construction safety signs are normally placed along the roads where construction work is taking place. The most widely used construction safety sign is the “Men at Work” sign used to tell the public that they need to be extra careful at a particular location, as construction work is going on. It is always preferred that they change their route.
This approach is more useful as drivers have to change their route because of diversions, and the chances of any accident remains lower. They can neglect the sign, but they cannot neglect the road barriers, as they can damage their vehicle by hitting these barriers.
Radiation Safety Sign
These signs are placed where there is nuclear radiation. Hospitals, and laboratories are the most common places, and workers here are exposed to radiation on a regular basis. A radiation hazard sign can be seen in an X-Ray room of any hospital. Only workers are allowed in these rooms, because they are trained, and use special suits, and gloves to cover themselves at all times. If anyone else enters by mistake, the radiation can directly damage the health of a person, and may even result in cancer.
