5 Steps to Banner Printing Success

October 29th, 2009 by Michael Pingree

What you can put on vinyl banners has changed greatly now that you have access to digital banner printing. Gone are the days of text only phrases. If you can envision it, it can be printed on a banner.

Just what makes a good banner? There are five key elements that go into the overall design of a banner.

1.Material

2.Material size

3.Fonts

4.Color contrast

5.Images

Part 1 — Substrate

Lightweight, standard and heavyweight are the three primary classes of banner material. Light banners are usually 10 ounces and are not a good choice for outdoor use. This type of banner is great for indoor use at birthday parties of holiday celebrations.

Any banner that is around 13 ounces is considered a standard weight banner. This banner is not only the standard for outdoor use, but is a terrific option for short term, multi year use banners. For example, if you have an annual winter clearance sale, this type of banner can be used for many seasons to come.

Anything 17 ounces and above is considered heavyweight material. It is really only needed in extreme weather conditions.

Part 2 — Banner size

The old axiom bigger is better doesn’t always work with banners. You need to have a banner that is in keeping with the location it is being installed. If you have a 20 foot tall wall, then you can have a larger banner. The banner needs to stand out and sell your product.

To maximize the readablity of your banner, you should have letters that are 1 inch in height for every 10 feet of viewing distance. You also need about the same amount of spacing for each line so that it is easily viewed. For example, if your banner will be 200 feet from the viewers, you must have letter that are no less than 20 inches high.

Part 3 — Fonts

The fonts that you use are critically important. Your font should be readable yet consistent with your brand image. The absolute worst thing you can do is to use a script font and use all capital letters. This is unreadable at any distance. If you want to employ all caps, be sure to use a sans serif font that is clean and readable. Other than that, feel free to be as creative as you want with fonts. There are some amazing ones out there that can greatly enhance your designs.

Part 4 — Color contrast

There are two type of color contrast that we need to look at. The first is font contrast and the second is the contrast between the colors used on the banner and the color of the location the banner will be installed.

black on yellow white on yellow yellow on black black on white

These are really good color combinations to use for your fonts/background colors. You want your words to pop off the page and draw the attention of the reader. Using the right combinations of colors can do just that.

The second, and often overlooked, area of concern is the contrast between the background color of your banner and that of the surface you will be mounting it. What is the point of having a banner that is “brick red” and then mount it against a red brick wall? The banner will completely disappear on the wall. The same goes for a “white” banner on a white wall. Again, no pop. The same contrasts that work for letters work for backgrounds as well.

Part 5 — Graphics

Images are what set modern banner printing apart from the days of old. The ability to digitally print the banner has given your designer the freedom to use a wide variety of web 2.0 style clipart and graphics and should guarantee you and original banner design. Of note: If you intend to supply your own digital files, make sure the bitmaps images have sufficient pixels to scale up to the size you plan to print.

In conclusion

Now that you have some basic understanding of what goes into a great banner design, your should be able to tell your banner printing supplier exactly what you want.
